Whats happening to our Stone Built Heritage?

Edinburgh a city built in stone, what’s happened to our
stonemasons?

With all our eggs in the one basket, our specialist stonemasons were
mostly working on Edinburgh’s traditional town houses and tenement blocks. What looks like bad management by Edinburgh District Council
has left Edinburgh in a sorry state of disrepair. No longer do we see scaffolding at every corner of Edinburgh, where our skilled tradesmen carried out their time proven repairs to our stone built heritage, after all Edinburgh is a world heritage site.

Stonemasons have had to adapt again and learn new skills, driving
taxis and delivering fast food meals. Mean while Edinburgh is left to crumble as buildings fall into a state of dis-repair, without a repair and
maintenance strategy in place, how do we encourage home owners and tenants’ to carry out repairs to their buildings.

So what does the future hold for our stone built heritage, crumbling
buildings that will only get worse and a work force that is depleted as highly skilled stonemasons leave the trade?
